Kaiten Sushi

Conveyor Belt Sushi in Bellingham

Sushi that comes to you. Here is how the belt works at Zen.

What is kaiten sushi?

Sushi That Comes to You

Kaiten-zushi — literally “rotating sushi” — is a Japanese format where finished plates travel around the dining room on a belt and guests take whatever they want as it passes. It removes the part of a sushi meal that puts people off: having to know what you want before you have seen it.

Zen Sushi & Bar is Bellingham’s conveyor belt sushi restaurant, in Barkley Village next to Regal Barkley Village Stadium 16. The belt runs all day, every day we are open, and it is stocked continuously so what passes you is what was just made.

How It Works

Four Steps, No Guesswork

Step 1

Grab a seat along the belt

The belt runs through the dining room, and the bronze Buddha and the bar are both right there. Sit anywhere along it and you are in business.

Step 2

Take what looks good

Plates come by continuously. See something you want, lift it off the belt. No ordering, no waiting, no menu-decoding required.

Step 3

Order anything else from the kitchen

Not everything rides the belt. Teriyaki, tempura, udon, yakisoba and the larger kitchen plates are made to order — just ask your server.

Step 4

Plates are counted at the end

Your stack is totalled when you are finished, so you only pay for what you actually took. Prices run from $2.00 to $17.99 per plate.

Why families like it

Easy for First-Timers

The belt is the reason conveyor belt sushi works so well for kids and for anyone who has never eaten sushi before. Nobody has to commit to an unfamiliar name on a menu — you can see every plate before you take it, and a plate you are unsure about costs a couple of dollars to try.

It also means nobody at the table waits. Everyone eats at their own pace, from their first plate onwards, which is why it suits families, groups and a quick bite before a film equally well.
